A Visual Tour of the Holy Temple

Two thousand years later, Jews still converge upon the Western Wall, the surviving remnant of the Holy Temple. Why does the Temple Mount still retain its hold upon our hearts?

Lesson 1
THE TEMPLE MOUNT

For years, Jerusalem and the Temple Mount have been in the center of attention in war rooms, at negotiating tables, and in news bulletins. It is well known as the holiest place for Jews, but it is revered as holy by many others as well. It has a special place in the hearts and minds of billions of people throughout the world. Not only those who are religious consider it special, but even those who believe themselves to be secular are pulled by its mystical power.

Lesson 2
THE TEMPLE COMPOUND

Beyond the gates of the mountain stood the Temple, where the sacred service of the Jewish people unfolded. The vast array of services required an intricate network of chambers and courtyards: preparatory rooms, designated spaces for specific ceremonies, storage for sacred vessels and offerings, and more. Together, they formed the complex infrastructure that supported the Temple’s central purpose: to serve as the meeting place between G‑d and His people.

Lesson 3
THE HOLY AND THE HOLY OF HOLIES

At the center of it all stood the Temple itself. In the courtyard stood the Altar, while the Temple building housed the Menorah, the Table of Showbread, the Incense Altar, and, in its innermost chamber, the Holy Ark. This was the destination to which the courtyards and chambers led, the place where G‑d’s presence was most intensely revealed. Only a select few were allowed into the Sanctuary, and even fewer ever entered the Holy of Holies. Yet the impact of what occurred within these walls reaches every corner of the world.
